CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
In the nineteenth century through the middle of the twentieths century DC to AC power convertion was accomplished by using generator set or rotary convertors. But in early twentieth century vacuum tubes and gas filled tubes begin to be used as switches in inverter circuits.
The commonly and widely used types of tube was the hydration, the electromechanical inverters origins explains the source of the term inverter.
The power supply system of inverter is a substitute means of power generation outside power supplied by other available means and source of power. As it’s name implies, “inverter” it invert direct current (dc) to alternating current. (AC) which is suitable for consumption as a result of systematic arrangement of the entire component enclosed in it’s design. The system which includes the oscillator amplifier, switching and transformation stages and the untempted power supply control state.
1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
As a result of unavailability of electricity supply and the need for advancing and maintaining a stable power supply in the department of Agricultural and Bio-Environmental Engineering computer room or auto card studio is important, inverter apart from generators have been designed and built to take care of the power failure. To enable effective learning by the student in the department with the use of desktop computers, constant power supply is required, unfortunately since the power supply company in the country is not reliable. Other means of generating power is advised to be acquired such as inverter, generator, solar wind mill power generation system etc.
1.3 AIM OF THE PROJECT
The aim of this project is to install a solar invert and a deep circle rechargeable batteries for powering thirty (30) desktop computers and a projector.
1.4 OBJECTIVES
The objective of this project was as follows:
i. To provide an alternative means of power supply in the computer room of the Department of Agricultural and Bio-Environmental Engineering
ii. To provide a constant and dependable power source/supply
iii. To reduce the effect of low/high current rate as it will be used to power about thirty desktop computes and a projector
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The project will provide a constant, reliable and dependable source of power available for powering the requiring thirty desktop and project. Inverter also improves the efficiency of the whole system. Energy gets when it is transferred from the panels to the home so as inverter that can minimize those losses, delivers more power and saves more money for the department in paying bills.
It will also serve as a case study for student within the department and thereby improving the physical knowledge during the installation.
1.6 SCOPE OF STUDY
The scope of the project is to ensure an adequate and appropriate installation of the solar inverter through a good inverter selection system and configuration, proper distribution of boards, junction boxes, cable, inverters weather monitoring control room and switch yards, fencing, installation and project management within the department of agricultural and bio-environmental engineering.
1.7 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
This project was designed not to carry too much or heavy load that is more than the rated value of the original maximum value of the inverter output load. In addition to the thirty desktop computer and projector, it can only be used to power electrical appliances with lesser power consumption in other to extend the life span of the inverter and also limited to domestic use only and not for industrial machines.
1.8 REPORT OUTLINE
This project covers five chapters, which chapter two discuss the literature review of the project work, chapter three discuss about the methods observed in the installation of the solar inverter, chapter four discusses about the cost analysis, result discussion and the chapter five discusses the conclusion and recommendation.
