CHAPTER ONE
BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Historically, education has been recognized as a basic human rights since the 1948 adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. However, the history of formal education in Nigeria have been sufficiently examined and attempt to tread on the well beaten path is needless[1]. In essence, the standard of education of any country is largely dependent on the standard of public schools in that country. Simply put, public School is often used as a yard stick by which a country’s educational growth and development is measured. In the 1970s/80s and early 90s in Nigeria, public schools were more popular because they had discipline, good teachers and adequate facilities for learning.[2] However, the deterioration of the country’s educational system has continued to generate a lot of scholarly debates.
This study shall dwell on the history of Government Secondary School Anchau Takalfia, from 1982 to 2015. This research is primarily on the history of Government Secondary School, Anchau Takalafia. The first chapter is the general introduction that gives a background to the study, the statement of the research problem, the aim and objectives of the study, the scope and limitation of the study, its justification and significance, research methodology employed in the study and finally review of related literature.
The second chapter focused on the early history of Anchau. It looked at the educational development in Northern Nigeria as a whole within the period under review. The third chapter focused on the establishment of Government Secondary School, Anchau. The fourth chapter would examine the educational development of Government Secondary School, Anchau. It investigate the infrastructural development in the school, enrolment policy, curriculum and subjects offered in the school.
The fifth chapter examined the impact of the school in Anchau; Government Secondary School, Anchau Takalafia, and socio- political impact of the school in Anchau. The chapter also discuss the decline in educational standard in the school, and the challenges facing the school since its establishment, the finances of the school.
