ABSTRACT

Gender discrimination is a broad phenomenon which is affecting every political, social and economic life. It has become a common occurrence everywhere in most developing and least developed countries. Large number of women has over the years entered into the male dominated workplaces mainly due to societal changes. Studies on gender discrimination had focused on other fields of life. However, little attention has been given to female workers in Kaduna State University. Hence, this study examined gender discrimination and its effects on employee performance, a study of female workers of Kaduna State University. Role Congruity Theory of Prejudice, Theory of Gender Practices in Organizations and Performance Perspective were adopted as framework. The study employed survey design. Multi-stage sampling technique was used to elicited primary data from female staff of Kaduna State University. Semi structured questionnaire was administered to 107 respondents. Data were collected on socio-demographic characteristics, nature of female workers discrimination, causes of gender discrimination of female workers, effects of gender discrimination on female employee and ways the menace of gender discrimination against female employee can be addressed. Five female staffs who are experienced on the subject under study were also purposively selected and interviewed. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentages (%), while qualitative data were content-analyzed. The nature of female workers discrimination shows that 64.5% of the respondents have been discriminated based on gender before in the university and 9.3% agree that often women are under-represented in management rank due to women being discriminated for promotion to higher ranks despite their continued high performance and qualifications. On causes of gender discrimination of female workers 55.1% of the respondents agreed that gender stereotypes and sexism leads to gender discrimination, and 39.3% agreed that management in workplace support gender discrimination. 43.9% agree that the inaccurate generalizations about the male and female attributes is a cause of gender discrimination and 58.9% strongly agree that socialization of children into specific roles by parents and relations in conformity with prescribed gender stereotypes is a cause of gender discrimination The effects of gender discrimination on female employee performance reveals that 68.2% said there is the more likelihood for female to encounter promotional stagnation, 64.5% agreed that gender discrimination on female employee affects their performance and career advancement, 86.0% agreed that the negative relationship between gender discrimination and employee performance reduces organizational productivity and efficiency, majority and 80.4% agreed that it destroys employee’s self–esteem and the employee may likely release negativity on those around her. Adoption and implementation of recommended policy measures will go a long way in improving gender relation in the academia in the Nigerian society thereby enhancing the task of national development.
