ABSTRACT
This study investigated internet usage, and academic performance of university of Uyo students. Internet today, enables information sharing and real time communication- unlike before, it was only for intelligence communication. Students use it frequently to satisfy their needs such as broadening their academic knowledge, and to communicate with each other in their academic communities. Researchers, in their different findings have come up with different result. Some support that internet influences academic performance of student negatively, while some argue that internet influences student academic performance, positively. The objectives of the study are to examine internet usage of University of Uyo students, find out what University of Uyo students prefer to use internet for, to determine the most internet usage purpose of University of Uyo students, ascertain the benefits of internet usage for academic learning, and how internet usage by University of Uyo students has influenced their academic performance. The research technique used for the study is survey research technique. Questionnaire with 14 items was used to gather the data for analyses. The Population of the study was based on 2017/2018 Undergraduate Degree Students of University of Uyo, which is 21, 544 population size. This study made use of Taro Yamane formula to select the sample size of 393 respondents. Data were collected, and tabulated, and analysed with tables, and percentages. The result shows that, internet usage by University of Uyo students, have positive influence on their academic performance, and the majority of them make use of internet. It is recommended that University of Uyo students should adopt the culture of dedicating more time to internet usage for academic learning, rather than the entertainment they focus on, to achieve excellent academic performance.
