ABSTRACT
The research is designed to study the impact of information communication technology (ICT) literacy on the academic achievement of some secondary schools in Kaduna North Local Government Area. In respect to this, research questions were used in gathering relevant information for the study. The research questions are stated as to what extent information communication technology has contributed to the standard of education in school. What kinds of training methods are adopted in information technology? Are the computer resource materials available in schools and are the implications of lack of the use of information technology to the students.

CHAPTER ONE
1.0 Introduction
The positive impact of information communication technology use in education on student’s achievement remains difficult to measure and open to much reasonable debate, it is believed that specific uses of information technology are used appropriately to complement teachers existing pedagogical philosophies. Information technologies are used differently in different school subjects, uses of information technology for simulations and processing and communication software in the development of student language and communication skills. The impact of information communication technology ICT literacy on the academic achievement of senior secondary school in Kaduna points out the effectiveness of ICT on the achievement and literacy on students.
1.1 Background of study
Information revolution is what computer process, transmits and store. We use information to calculate, communicate and make decision, we also use computer to create, manipulate and manage information faster and easier than with any system previously devised (Johnson 2002).
An education society is regarded as highly developed society which can also be achieved through proper utilization of computer in their educational institution therefore computer literacy is a must for any nation wishing to be educationally advanced.
Information: is any kind of event that affects the state of a dynamic system that can interpret the information conceptually, information is the message being conveyed therefore in a general sense information is “knowledge communicated or received concerning a particular fact or circumstance or rather information is an answer to a question” (Holmes 2000).
Technology: is the making, modification, usage and knowledge of tools machines, techniques, craft, systems and methods of organization in order to solve a problem achieved a goal handle an applied input/output relation or perform a specific function (Kozma 2003).
It can also refer to the collection of such tools, including machinery modifications, arrangements and procedures. Technologies significantly affect human as well as other animal’s species, ability to control and adapt to their natural environments the term can either be applied generally or to specific areas, examples include construction technology medical technology and information technology.
The application of computer to information handling has contributed a new tool and a new dimension of complexity through its ability to store and process vast amounts of data at high speed. Information technology support activities involving the creation of storage, manipulation and communication of information, Together with their related methods of management application (Taiwo 1999). Therefore information technology is needed to support information system.
1.2 Statement of the problem
As the knowledge of computer is every day becoming important to the lives of the people, schools in Kaduna are facing a lot of problem in this aspect it has been the general opinion that information communication technology in Kaduna public schools is very low due to the fact that computer education is not effectively used in our educational institutions, presence of computer should be the priority of every institution why is it that these machines are not stationed? is it because there are no learned personnel to pass the knowledge to the students, or is it because governments do not provide schools with these machines?
However, considering the importance of using information tech in our education institution such as helping both the students and teachers in conducing lessons help in storing decision making act as instructional materials for effective teaching and learning process and also assist in solving other academic and administrative problem.
In the view of the above this research will look or address itself to the issue responsible for the slow pace in uses of information technology in our education institution.
1.3 Objective of the study
· To determine the extent information communication technology has contributed to teaching and learning in some schools in Kaduna North.
· To examine the training methods used in information communication technology classes
· To investigate weather information communication technology resources materials are available in schools.
· To examine the implication of absence of the use of information communication technology in the schools.
1.4 Significant of the study
This research study will be of great benefit to students who will be introduced to use of computer to acquire knowledge, skill and later become computer literate.
It is also significant to the teachers in conducting research and solving education problems.
The study will also be significant to the administrators to ascertain the education and assist them in taking decision regarding academic issues it will also help curriculum planners to incorporate information technology in the school curriculum in order to achieve the national educated objectives.
1.5 Research questions
The researcher would like to find solution to the following questions which will assist in achieving the objective of study. The questions are:
· To what extent is the use of information technology contributed to teaching and learning in the institution?
· What is the availability of technology materials in schools?
· What are the reactions of the students towards the use of information technology method of teaching?
· What are the likely implications for not using information technology in schools?
1.6 Scope of the study
The researcher confined to only some certain secondary school in Kaduna north which constitute a large population of 360 students and 135 teachers therefore the researcher feels that the population is up to the percentage required. The schools however are located at Kaduna north.
1.7 Limitations
Putting technology before education one of the enduring difficulties of technology use of the enduring difficulties education is that educational planners and technology advocates think of the technology first and then investigate the education applications of this technology only later.
