Chapter One
Introduction to the Research
1.0Â Â Â Â Â Â Introduction
           This research seeks to reconstruct and evaluate the transformative pattern of agriculture in Makarfi Local Government Area (LGA) from earliest times to present, though, emphasis would be placed on the periods from 1960 to 2014. Agriculture have always been the main economic activity as well as largest employer of in Nigeria as a whole and Makarfi in particular. Thus, to evaluate the pattern of agricultural transformation in Makarfi; the research is classified into five chapters.
           Chapter One gives a comprehensive background of the study, alongside the rationale that            necessitated the research.
           Chapter Two attempts to reconstruct the socio-economic and political history of Makarfi from origin to the 1960.
           Chapter Three addresses the research question, the nature of agricultural transformation from earliest time to 1960 and the changes on agricultural production in Makarfi based on the impact of independent Nigerian government policies from 1960 to the 1980s.
           Chapter Four observes the changing pattern in agriculture from 1980s to 2014 with special focus on government policies such as; Back to the Land Policy, National Directorate of Employment (NDE) and Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) and the impact of these policies on agricultural transformation in the area of study (Makarfi).
           Chapter five is the summary of the research with a general conclusion of the entire study.

           The objective of this research is to access the development of agriculture in Makarfi L.G.A. this is because agriculture has remained the dominant economic activity of the area.
           The aims of the study include:
i.                   The attempt to trace the origin of agriculture in the community, and how it has      contributed to the growth and sustenance of the area.
