INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
The importance of equipping the youths with employable and profitable skills made the Nigeria Government emphasize the implementation of technology in her education system. Technology in education system, as Ogwo (2004) asserted has transformed education to be of technological nature. Ogbionu (1999) pointed that technology means vocational preparation that indicate combination of education and training based directly on experience at work in formal school system. In addition Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN 2014) stated that industrial education is that form of education that leads to the acquisition of practical and applied skills as well as basic scientific knowledge that will enable individuals to be self reliant useful members of the society. The expected usefulness of the technology education recipients and self reliance in divide ability to create jobs and to earn living through application of required practical skills. Skill is the ability to do something expertly and well, in accordance to set standard or manufactories instruction. According to Okeke (2002), to posses skill is to demonstrate the habit of acting, thinking and behaving in a specific activity in such a way that the process becomes natural to the individual through repetition or practices. More so, skill development and improvement is very important in a national resources. This is because skill acquisition and it improvement help in developing find advance institute potential in individuals. Relevant skill in individual technical education are acquire in technical colleges.
Technical colleges are post primary schools where student learn skills in various trades related occupations. Akpan (2003) stated that technical colleges are established to prepare individuals to acquire practical skills, basic scientific knowledge and attitudes required as craftsmen and technicians at sub professional level, the technical colleges founded in (1814) by the arch duke John Baptist, had in (1901) about 400 pupils. Bakare (2008) technical colleges charged with the production of craftsmen and technicians. Technical colleges play a vital roles in Nigeria, they train and produce technicians for industry, they help toward the goals of self employment and job creation, and strive, struggle toward technical advancement and acquisition. Through the technical colleges youth acquire such skills as skills technicians. Bricklayers, carpenters, painters, auto mechanics, laboratories and pharmacies technicians electricians and skilled vocation nurses e.t.c according to Federal Ministry of Education (2004) technical colleges education is defined as that aspect of education which lead to the acquisition of practical and applied skills as well as basic scientific knowledge” NBTE (2007) the technical colleges are under the auspice of the ministries of education and the national board for technical education. Technical colleges education provide the following.
a. Provide general education
b. Provide trainees in selected occupation
c. Help trainees to develop the requisite skills and abilities necessary for security and retaining a job.
Okoro (2002) stated that the technical colleges intended to prepare students for entry into various occupations. Technical colleges train craftsmen levels in occupation areas among which included building technology.
Building technology as a subject in technical colleges has skills requirement for effective teaching and learning as well as putting it into practice which transformed input in to output. This transformation involve rational organization in corporation of scientific knowledge into a system of production which encompasses the technical, engineering, managerial, administrative, marketing and consumptive aspect of the whole economy in view of the role building technology play in daily living. Building technology is like many trades that make up the technical education, it can only be acquired through skills and manipulation tendencies for effective improvement of this education, there most be good co-ordination between knowledge of the subject matters skills acquired, experience as well as versatility, cordial relationship should also exist between the teacher’s and students. Olaitan (2000) define building technology teachers education as that types of education which lead to the acquisition of basic knowledge and pedagogical competencies pre-requisite for effective classroom instruction it is widely understood that the process through which society transmit knowledge skills, understanding that are value for living to it members from one generation to another. Indeed building technology has a vital functions in the society development to promote skill and knowledge of building technology teachers. In technical colleges it will enhance building technology education institutions, society and new world building technology mean while the training of the students can only be effective and meet the demand of today’s technology when their teacher’s technical skills are improved. Hence, this will enable the teachers to be up to date. Based on the above context this study is designed to determine the skills improvement needs of building technology teachers in technical college in Kano State.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of producing skilled and competent personnel for technical advancement, the teaching of building technology in technical colleges in Nigeria generally appear not to have been impressive. Okorie (2001) reported that technical college products are not competent enough to take up the available skill jobs. Oranu (2004) stated that technical colleges product are weak in practice of their trades. Furthermore, the standard of performance of Nigerian technician in general is at the moment very low thereby retarding the overall productivity of the Nigeria economy (Okorie, 2001). Similarly Basu (2000) stated that most problems associated with teaching of building technology and technical education institutions hinge on manual skills possessed and teachers’ ability to teach. Basu further explained that these problems have given rise to in efficiency and adaptability of technical education in the world of modern building technology. Due to specious or superficiality of modern technology skills by building technology teacher’s in technical colleges the products of the institutions are being restricted in skillfulness, efficiency, proficiency and productivity. Hence, the rate at which unemployment is increasing in very alarming. Ogbonya and Fakorede (2009) emphasized that if teacher’s keep their knowledge and skills up to date by period of further experience within the world of work and could teach effectively, there is high probability that Technical teachers and students will be families with and acquire relevant skills for adaptability in the world of modern building technology. It is thereby becoming imperative to ascertain the skills possessed, and needed by building technology teachers for improvement and effective delivery to their duties.
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of the study is to determine the skills improvement needs of teachers in building technology in technical colleges in Kano state. Specifically the study seek to:
1. Identify the technical skills needed by building technology teachers in technical colleges in Kano state.
