CHAPTER ONE

1.1      BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful all praise and solutions are due to Allah (SWA) the Lord of the universe. Whoever Allah (SWA) guides there is no one to misguide him. May the Allah’s peace and blessing be upon the seal of the prophets and Massager Muhammad (SAW) his Companions his family and all those who  follow  their footsteps till the Day of Resurrection.

The religion of Islam is total obedience and submission to the will of Allah (SWA) as it guides Muslim in all aspects of life. It explains the Qur’anic message to the whole of mankind. Allah says:

I (Muhammad) have been commanded only to worship the lord of this city (makkah), who has sanctified it and to whom belongs everything. And I am commanded to be from among the Muslim (1)

Also Allah say:

And that I should recite the Qur’an, then whoever receives guidance, receives it for the good of his own self; and whoever goes astray, say: “I am only one of the warners.2)

The exegesis and demonstrations of this message guided by the Prophet (SAW) opens the way for Da’wah mission. It shows the Universality of the message to all mankind in calling and inviting people to Islam. Allah says:

“And we have sent you (O Muhammad) not but as a mercy for the Alamin (mankind and Jinns)”(3).

Also says:

Invite (mankind, O Muhammad) to the way of your lord (i.e Islam) with wisdom and fair preaching, and Qur’an with them in way that is better. (4)

And who is better in speech than he who [say: My lord is Allah”, and then stands firm( act upon His order), and] invites (men) to Allah’s and does righteous deeds and says: I am one of the Muslim (5) Q41:33

Furthermore Allah says:

And by the mercy of Allah, you dealt with them gently. And had you been severe and harsh-hearted they would have broken away from about you.(6)

This shows that   Da’wah is the major key, and knowing how to invite and preach to people to follow the path of Islam. The need and importance of peaceful Da’wah should be emphasized by propagating it to people (Muslim and non-Muslim). Because it aims at enlightening,  propagating, clarifying of any doubt and defending the religion of Islam in all ramifications.

History has discovered the dilapidated situation that prevailed the Arabian Peninsula before the advent of Islam. The era was characterized with immoralities; wars battle prevalence of anarchy but with the coming of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) with the mission of Da’wah which was for the period of twenty three years things changed. The peninsula changed to total inculcation of harmony, peace, and installed their heart to the warship of Allah alone.

Allah described their status as follows:

You (true believers in Islamic monotheism and real followers of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and his sunnah) are the best of people ever raised up for mankind: you enjoin Al-maruf and forbid Al-mukar and you believe in Allah. And had the people of scripture believed, it would have been better for them, among them are some who have faith, but most of them are rebellion(7)

The era of predecessor (Tabium) was a period that Da’wah activities faced challenges because in the era the compilation of tradition and the science of authentic, week and fabrication emerged.

After the era of the predecessor (Tabiun) still the need for Da’wah were felt from different angles. For example: Muhammad Ibn Abdulwahad (the founder of wahabis) which served as a revivalist movement (1791 – 1792) discussed the religion through his writings. Then in Nigeria we have another revivalist and Da’i  Uthman Ibn Foduye (1754 – 1817) the era which needed a personality who could revive the religion and remove it from the innovation, worshiping idol and other satanic activities. Ibn foduye was able to preach, write and propagate Islam in different parts of the then Hausa land.

1.2        STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

v The Da’wah helps in the propagating, enlightening, educating and guiding people to do what is right only. The Da’i explains to people what is compulsory, superogatory and other necessities to Muslims.

v The Da’i work is necessary. If Muslims would neglect the propagation of Islam and allow the Christian Missionaries to Christianize  people the result would not be palatable to the Muslims at all.

v The same is if the elite do not support Muslim Missionary activities with their wealth and knowledge the result will not be palatable to Muslims.

v Similarly if the youth do not study how they would address the looming problems of possible conversion of people in the villages, town and cities from Islam to Christianity, there would be problems.

1.3   SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study will reveal that there is negligence of Da’wah activities in localities, hence the conversion of hundred of villagers into the Christianity.

This research critically analyzed the negligent attitude of Muslims toward the propagation of Islam. The predicaments that Muslims are facing in our contemporary society need to have those who could sacrifice their time in  spread, preaching, propagating and teaching Muslim and non-Muslim the religion of Islam as it is. Also there is need to re-instate the authority of Da’wah through   clarifying and clearing misconception in Da,wah
