ABSTRACT
This research study was carried to evaluate the effects of harmful eye practices among the people of Southern Kaduna Local Government Area of Kaduna State at the Primary Health Care Center in Barnawa Kaduna. A descriptive, cross sectional survey method was adopted. The target population of the area of study was about 3,000 with a sample of 150 people selected using a non – probability sampling technique. The result of the findings show that the people of the community prefer traditional medicine to orthodox one 40 (26.7%) applied traditional drugs while 10 (6.6%) used hospital prescribed drugs. Other studies have identified that males tend to be more affected by this practice than females. This is in keeping with our findings 53.33% males to 46.47% females. The middle aged group 40 .50 (46.7%) with the highest occurrence are more susceptible than the younger group closely followed by aged 20 – 30years and 60 years and above (20%) and the least 10 – 19 years (13.33%). The most common cause of eye disease was germ (40%). The following recommendations were made; Government should encourage the training of more community based ophthalmic nurses to improve eye health education. The management of the effects of harmful eye practices is mostly adequate information, cancelling and avoidance of unnecessary use of self medication that are not prescribed by the ophthalmologist.
