The purpose of this study is to investigate the extent of the use of audio – visual aids in teaching and learning of the geography education in Junior Secondary Schools in Enugu East Local Government Area. The results are presented in tables in accordance with the research questions.
Table one presents the mean scores of the geography education teachers in Junior Secondary Schools. The table has three items. All the three items recorded low mean scores on the extent of use of audio – visual aids by the geography education teachers in teaching and learning the geography education in Enugu East Local Government Area. The mean scores are 2.31, 2.29 and 2.43. These scores are below the mean score of 2.50 and therefore, they are considered as being below the average score. The low score show that the teachers hardly use audio – visual aids and where the teachers make minimal use of the audio – visual aids, the effect may not be felt.Table two shows the extent to which audio – visual aids prove effective in teaching and learning geography education in Junior Secondary School in Enugu East Local Government Area. The items are scored 2.67, 2.73, 2.91 and 2.84. These four items respectively are very high. All of them are above the average score of 2.50. They are considered as being positive. This indicates that audio – visual aids are very effective and enhance the teaching and learning of the geography education greatly when actually and frequently used.
Table three and four are based on research question three. Table three presents the mean scores of male and female teachers on the use of audio – visual aids in teaching and learning geography education in Junior Secondary Schools in Enugu East Local Government Area. The item shows that male teachers make more use of audio – visual aids than female with the mean score of 2.99. With mean score of 2.68 in item ten, both male and female teachers use audio – visual aids. The respondents refute the allegation that female teachers are fragile, easy going and do not like any complex manipulation or do not like using audio – visual aids. The fact may be that the aids may not be
availablein the schools and cannot be easily procured by the female teachers. In table four, the extent of difference is determined. Male teachers are slightly higher than female teachers by 0.04 mean differences.
Research question four is represented in two tables. These are tables five and six. While table five indicates the mean scores of the respondents on the extent of difference of the influence of qualification on the use of audio – visual aids, table six presents whether qualified teachers make better use of audio – visual aids than the unqualified Accounting education teachers in teaching geography education. From the analysis, qualification is a factor. The qualified make better use of audio – visual aids than the unqualified teachers by the mean difference of 0.53.
CONCLUSION
This study investigated the extent of use of audio – visual aids by the
teachers in junior Secondary Schools in teaching the geography education
in Enugu East Local Government. This study investigated the extent of
use of audio – visual aids by the teachers in junior Secondary Schools
in teaching the geography education in Enugu East Local Government-
area. The study was guided by four research questions. Data were
gathered and analyzed in tables. There were six tables from the
findings, the conclusion is drawn and rested on the following
statements:
(1) Audio – visual aids are very effective in leaching geography education
Junior secondary schools in Enugu East local Government Area;
(2) Teachers of geography education in Junior secondary make very minimal
use of audio-visual aids in teaching geography education;
(3) Both male and female teachers can effectively manipulate any kind of
audio- visual aids in teaching geography education, even though, male
teachers are slightly better than the female teachers;
(4) Qualification is a good factor in using audio-visual aids in teaching the geography education in Enugu East local Government Area. Qualified teachers use the aids better than the unqualified teachers of geography education.
RECOMMENDATION
In view of the findings, the researchers make the following recommendations:
(1) The result of this study shows that audio- visual aids have positive
effect on the students’ performances and prove very effective;
therefore, the audio-visual aids should be procured, and distributed in
all the schools in English East local Government Area of Enugu
(2) The teachers do not use audio- visual aids, even though they can
manipulate it effectively, so they should be encouraged to use the aids.
It is not necessarily that they should only go for the electronic
types; they can equally devise local improvised types. Teachers, on
their own should up-date their knowledge in the use of the audio¬visual
aids in teaching the geography education.
(3) Since qualification is a factor in teaching and learning geography education in Junior secondary schools in Enugu East Local Government Area, both the State education Board and the local Government Education Commission should liaise together to allow or permit the non-qualified teachers to upgrade their training and take up courses in education which qualify them to teach effectively. The government should stop employing the unqualified teaches. The knowledge of the qualified ones should be upgraded and updated too.
