ABSTRACT

This study investigated factors that are responsible for deviant behaviour among secondary school students as expressed by the teachers in Uyo metropolis. Specifically, the study examined the influence of gender, age, and qualification on the variable being investigated. One hundred (100) respondents were drawn from teachers in Uyo. The instrument used for this study was “Causes of deviant behaviour (QCDB)”, developed by the researcher and validated by experts in the Department of Counsellor Education. Three null hypotheses generated for the study were tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance using t-test statistical and analysis of variance (ANOVA). All hypotheses were accepted. The findings of the study showed that teachers expressed causes of deviant behaviour on the basis of gender, age and qualification. The study indicated the factors that motivate the deviant behaviours among the students. From the findings of this study, it was recommended that educative programme or workshop such as counselling should be provided for the students, homes, parent and the nation at large. In other words, guidance counsellors should be allocated to secondary school to help the students and the parents in organizing enlightenment programmes, seminars, and symposium.
