ABSTRACT

As we adapt to the trend in information and communication technology which is affecting every sector of our economic life, our educational system has equally been shifting from manual to computerized system. E-Library however has become and inevitable tool to the people. This new library system provides Primary and Secondary information electronically through communication network. It enables any one at any time or place to access a library’s collection without actually going to the library and at the same time honoring copyright values. This E-library is an information system which employs computerized network with digitalized materials and data.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0     INTRODUCTION

The word library, which is English, derives from the latin word “liber” meaning a book, A library holds a wide variety of reading materials, and provide ample space for quite study. A full range of services are provided in a library, as loaning, reservation, in-ter –library, etc.

The traditional method stores records of library transaction and references using the filing system. But this has cause many inconvenience to the library staff.

A digital library is a library that consists of collection of library materials (such as text, prints, multimedia etc) in digital format and services required to make them available for users. The digital content are stored, processed and transferred via binary devices and networks.

A Digital Library system is a type of information retrieval system, as includes information in virtually every human endeavor. This account for general acceptance because of the high value space on the availability of information.

1.2     OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

·        To provide easy access to library information through a well-designed and detailed catalogue

·        To aid library staff in record keeping through an automatic record keeping system

·        To develop a central database of library collections and install application software required in accessing the document formats

1.3     SCOPE/DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The library is face with the challenge to meet the information needs of the users as a result of lack of reading materials .this project work cover how to locate subject catalogue access points. The development of digital library offers local and remote access to library materials.

1.4     SIGNIFFICANCE OF THE STUDY

·        It will help users access research materials

·        It will provide access to library information through designed and detailed catalogue

·        It will help student retrieve information

1.5     LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

·        Insufficient details from staff at the initial time

·        Unavailability of related reading sources to provide information

·        Time factor in carrying at the research and doing other academic activities was a constraint

1.6     DEFINITION OF TERMS

LIBRARY: Libraries holds a wide variety of reading material, and provide ample space for quite studying.

DIGITAL LIBRARY: it is libraries that consist of collection of library materials (such as text, prints, multimedia etc) in a digital format and the service required to make them available for users.

BOOK: is any document that has a collection of forty-nine pages or more and that is bound together with a distinctive title

CARD CATALOGUE: These are entries alphabetically arranged that     are printed on separate cards which shown the library materials.

CATALOGUE: A list of items in a set of collections such as books in the library, usually including details of where to find them

CALL NUMBER: Identifying mark for locating a book in the library

LIBRARIAN: A person who works professionally in library, and may hold a degree in librarianship
